Protect the environment = save animals !

Helping animals is easier than some may imagine. Of course cutting back on the number of animal products that you purchase is a huge way of helping, but there are other environmental ways you can help. The organization WWF, helps preserve natural conservations and in doing so helps save endangered animals. Chelsea Lumiere a representative from WWF was kind enough to answer some questions to do with the organization.

Q: What can the public do to get involved?

A: The public can do a lot to get involved with helping our environment. We have a program here called the Community Panda program, which is for third party fundraisers. People can raise funds through birthday parties, community events, school events etc, and they can then donate the funds to WWF-Canada. We also have a great volunteer program here at WWF, as well as an online community to help people with ideas of every day actions they can take to reduce their impact on the environment: http://community.wwf.ca/.

Q: How does the Organization go about protecting the conservation lands?

A: WWF-Canada works with other non-profits, governments as well as companies to try and get land protected and practices changed. There are few examples of successes that we have had at the following link to our site: http://wwf.ca/about_us/successes/.

Q: How does protecting these lands, help endangered animals?

A: Protecting these lands and waters is vital to the survival to many Canadian species. Once land is protected, development of these areas comes to a stop and species are able to flourish, or at least survive without having their habitats encroached on by humans.

Toronto Humane Society : Not so Humane

According to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Humane Society officials were arrested and now face animal cruelty charges. The shelter’s president, chief veterinarian and three other officials face criminal charges after undercover globe and mail reporters discover a wide variety of animal right violations. Animals were denied access to food and water and were left to die in harsh conditions. The disease-infested shelter became a place of horror as animals suffering with cancer and other deadly diseases were left to die. Dozens of animals were found dead in cages. These harsh conditions became the main concerns for animal activists. It is a shame that a place where animals are supposed to feel safe and loved became a place of fear.

The Newest Sport: Bear Baiting

In Pakistan, the newest sport is Bear Baiting. Bear Bating can be linked back to the medieval era, where entertainment was hard to come across. It is a bloody, gruesome sport where bears are taken from their natural habitat and forced to fight aggressive, purposely starved dogs. These bears are not able to protect themselves as they are tied so tightly to polls and their claws and teeth are removed. Some bears are even blindfolded, so that they have no idea what is going on. After a fight these bears are very weak and near death. However, until the bear is announced dead, it will be forced to fight another set of hungry dogs. Not only is this sport unusually cruel to bears; it is also abusive to the dogs. Countless of dogs are starved over an amount of days so that they become aggressive and violent. They are then forced to fight and kill a fellow animal, while being cheered on by the crowds. Watch the video from Goggle to learn more.
